This presentation recapitulates research on the working copies (Handexemplare) of Galerie Hugo Helbing in Munich. Since the gallery’s business records have been lost, these working copies, which are available via German Sales, are the key source of information about its internal transactions.

The systematic indexing of over 600 of the gallery’s handwritten customer lists is now complete, unlocking a wealth of information and vital data on thousands of previously unknown consignors and written bids. By matching the names against norm data provided e. g. by the GND, enhanced entity linking becomes possible. Using selected acquisitions from different periods as case studies, this talk reveals transaction networks and historical actors.
