Code of Conduct
For respectful and non-discriminatory interaction
Welcome to the annual conference of the Arbeitskreis Provenienzforschung e.V.! Everyone should feel safe and valued here and be able to take part in scholarly discourse on equal terms.
Scope: This code applies to everyone involved: participants, speakers, moderators, the organising team and service providers. It applies throughout the conference: in the sessions, during breaks, at the evening programme, on excursions, and in online formats and social-media posts about the conference.
Discuss respectfully
We listen to one another and let others finish. We criticise theses, methods and interpretations of sources, but not people. In discussions we keep our remarks short so that as many people as possible can speak. We are aware that hierarchies and differing employment conditions influence who dares to speak.
Speak and act without discrimination
We do not tolerate discrimination, in particular antisemitism and racism, sexism, and the devaluation of people on the basis of origin, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or age.
Handle the language of sources with care
Our sources often contain Nazi terminology or colonial-racist terms. We quote them only where necessary for understanding, and we mark and contextualise them as the language of the sources.
Consider those affected
Participants include descendants of persecuted people, claimants, and representatives of source communities. We speak about biographies, loss and violence with due care. Speakers announce distressing images in advance, such as images of human remains, depictions of violence or persecution documents.
Respect boundaries
Harassment of any kind has no place here. This includes sexualised remarks, unwanted physical contact, intimidation, and repeatedly approaching someone despite their refusal. A “no” counts, including a non-verbal one.
Respect image and personality rights
We photograph and film people only with their consent. Anyone who does not wish to be photographed may ask for means of marking at the registration desk. The official conference documentation will take this into account.
Slides may be photographed for personal reference. When sharing slide content, credit the speaker, cite the sources and do not circulate unpublished results, protected images or personal data without consent. Speakers who do not want their slides to be photographed will mention this at the beginning of their presentation. Please refrain from making any video or audio recordings of the talks.
Remove barriers
We always speak into the microphone and design slides to be easily legible. Accessibility needs are welcome at hannover2026@arbeitskreis-provenienzforschung.org.
