The Alternative Gaze: Reflecting on Interdisciplinary Provenance Research Tools through the Case Study of the Fascist Modern Art Market at the Venice Biennale

Numerous studies have examined the historical context, organisational and artistic choices, cultural diplomacy, and protagonists of the Fascist Venice Biennales. Yet an “oblique reading” of provenance can reveal the dynamics of their underground art market and the micro-histories of actors active during Fascism and the RSI.

Considering the Venice International Art Exhibition as a marketplace for modern and applied arts, the presentation explores the epistemological potential of provenance in academic research starting from the role of provenance in reparative justice and its necessity of gathering objective evidence.

Methodologically speaking, Ginzburg’s historical theories, market studies and psychological insights reveal the interconnection between objects and individuals. Meanwhile, interdisciplinarity, comparative analyses and digital humanities mapping locate Italy’s provincial and/or central role within transnational networks.
