Chancen und Herausforderungen für die Erinnerungskultur am Beispiel einer Buchrückgabe

In October 2026, the mayor of the State Capital of Hannover will return a book that belonged to Else Kreuzer, née Goldschmidt (1896–1944), to her heirs. The book was identified as Nazi-looted property as part of provenance research conducted at the Public Library. The Public Library is organizing the visit of the family members from Israel in collaboration with the ZeitZentrum Zivilcourage, which was established in 2021 as an interactive educational center on Hannover under National Socialism and promotes and fosters the city’s culture of remembrance. Using this practical example, the discussion will focus on the impulses for remembrance culture that can arise from (library-based) provenance research, as well as the synergies and obstacles involved in cooperation at the municipal level.
